Health and Safety

What should I know about Student Health Services (SHS)?
  • Student Health Services (SHS) serves all Claremont Colleges undergrads, including Scripps students鈥攔egardless of insurance plan.
  • All Scripps students, despite whether they have the student health insurance plan or whether they have stayed on their parents鈥 insurance, can seek services at SHS.
  • SHS provides outpatient office visits for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute as well as chronic health conditions.
  • Students can schedule an office visit free of charge. Same day appointments are usually available. Any service-specific fees will be disclosed to the student ahead of time.
  • Fully confidential services (except when required by law or requested by the student).
  • Student Health Services (SHS) does not bill insurance. Students can request receipts for SHS medical services to submit to insurance providers for reimbursement
  • 24/7 telemedicine via TimelyCare through the Health Portal.

What should I know about the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)?
  • Mandatory coverage: All Scripps students are auto-enrolled in the Claremont Colleges Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) each year.
  • Opt out annually: If not enrolling in SHIP, students must waive SHIP every year.
  • Plan details: For more information about the Student Health Insurance Plan (full benefits, exclusions and limitations) and other available programs and services, please visit .
  • SHIP advantage: Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) generally provides full reimbursement of SHS charges, and students can use that reimbursement to pay off their SHS charges.
  • Non-SHIP users: SHS is usually considered an out-of-network provider for those not on SHIP.
  • No direct billing: SHS does not bill insurance. Students must submit their walk-out statement of charges to their insurance for reimbursement.
What mental health resources are available through Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services (MCAPS)?
  • MCAPS provides mental health services to the students of The Claremont Colleges. Its staff is made up of mental health professionals including psychologists, doctoral level therapists, post-doctoral fellows, psychiatrists and support staff.
  • In-person crisis support available during office hours when phone or Zoom isn鈥檛 sufficient.

  • Services include brief individual/couples therapy, group sessions, psychiatry, crisis response, workshops, and consultation.
