  • This will be a day to remember! Make sure you capture it. Come take a photo as a family outside the iconic ivy-covered windows of Balch Hall.

  • WRITE A LETTER TO YOUR STUDENT
  • Plan to stop by Seal Court to write a note to your student. Leave it with us. In the first few weeks of the semester, we’ll place it in your student’s mailbox. Surprise them with words of encouragement and support as they settle into Scripps!

  • This event marks the end of programming for parents and families on move-in day. We’ll toast them, say our goodbyes for now and send them off for student-only orientation programming until the semester begins.

What to expect upon arrival on campus: 

1. At station 1, students will check in and receive their room key and student ID.
2. At station 2, the Office of Parent Engagement will greet you and provide a welcome packet.
3. At station 3, you will be dropping off your move in items. Our student leaders will be welcoming and directing you on that process. This is drop off/unloading only; vehicles will not be able to park at this point.
4. After station 3, you will proceed to park your vehicle. Parking will be available at our Tiernan Field House parking structure or any available parking spots on the adjacent streets. Parking is first-come, first-served. We encourage you to drive around until you find an available parking space.
5. After parking, you can meet up with your group and finish moving in. We also encourage you to swing by the Resource Fair, Scripps Scrapps, Family Photo Booth, and Letter Writing noted in the map below.

ARRIVAL AND MOVING IN

• Incoming students will move into their Residence Halls (August 25) at their assigned move-in time. Times have been assigned to all students between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Your student should confirm their assigned check-in time in their Housing Portal.
  • If your student is participating in a pre-orientation program or is a fall CMS athlete, they have been/will be provided additional details about specifics relating to their move-in process.
• We recommend families plan to arrive to the back of the car queue no more than 10 minutes before your student’s arrive time. For example, if your student’s assigned slot begins at 9 a.m., you can plan to enter the line of vehicles at 8:50 a.m. Please avoid arriving too early as it can delay the move-in process. Students who miss their assigned time or arrive late may check in between 11:30 a.m. and noon. After noon, late arrivals will be redirected to the Office of Campus Life to complete check-in beginning at 1:30 p.m.
• If you are not driving up through check-in, you can plan to walk up to Honnold Gate at the start of your student’s assigned time block.
• Res Life asks students to have no more than two additional people helping with physically moving into their space. Other members of the family are welcome on campus, we just ask that you limit the number of people in the small dorm spaces.

PROGRAMMING

• Once your student is moved in, then what? There will be a resource fair, lunch, family photo booth, an official welcome from President Marcus-Newhall and other College leaders, as well as time to explore campus. Activities for parents and families will end with the President’s Reception & Family Farewell at 4:30 p.m. Families should plan to say goodbye to their student by 5:30 p.m. on August 25.
• All parents and families are invited to participate in the programming on August 25, even if their student moved in prior to this date.

OTHER REMINDERS

• Before you purchase new dorm items consider waiting and buying from Scripps Scrapps during Move-In Day! Scripps Scrapps is a student-led program to collect used dorm items left behind during spring move out to resell to students in the fall. This is a great way to reduce waste and get cheap, affordable dorm necessities. They have hangers, kitchenware (plates, utensils, etc.), mini fridges, lamps, fun decorations, and so much more! Check out their instagram page for latest information.
• We will have water filling stations all throughout campus during move-in. We encourage you to bring a water bottle with you so you can keep it full and stay hydrated during a hectic day.
• There will be two cooling stations available all day long located in Balch Hall and the Humanities Auditorium. Families are welcomed to hang out in the cool air conditioning as long as needed.
• Did you ship items to campus? Pick them up in Vita Nova 100. While the mailroom is located off of Seal Court, all packages for incoming students moving in will stored until collected in Vita Nova 100. Refer to the move-in map above. The mail room sent incoming students an email with information about where to find their mailbox number and when they can receive their packages.
