For Scripps alumna Johanna Hennig ’09, graduating with a BA in mathematics was not enough. This spring she earned her PhD in math at the University of California, San Diego. And she is not alone in her pursuits.

109-Foot Mural Lands at San Francisco Airport

Amy Ellingson ’86 recently unveiled a 10-by-109-foot mural for San Francisco International Airport. Untitled (Large Variation), located in Terminal 3, is the largest public art commission in the airport’s collection.

Scripps Alumna Builds Reality Out of Fantasy

In October 2012, Seattle hosted the 10th anniversary of BrickCon, a public, interactive exhibition that brings together adult LEGO fans and hobbyists. Among the attendees was Scripps alumna Alice Finch ’96, who unveiled what is perhaps the largest LEGO structure ever built by an individual—a replica of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

A Legal Internship Program for First-Years

At Scripps, entering first-years have internship opportunities well before classes begin.

“Providing students with a meaningful internship opportunity before they even begin their first year gives them valuable experience and a leg up on stiff nationwide competition for future internships. It is our hope that this program can be expanded among the parent community so that as many incoming Â鶹Çø students as possible can jumpstart their careers in this way,” says David Scheidemantle (P ’17).

Professor Winston Ou: A Modern-day Renaissance Man

The captivating beauty of mathematical theory entices Professor Winston Ou to spend countless hours searching for answers. “Working so hard has its own pleasure,” says Ou, an associate professor of mathematics. “With hard, hard, hard work, one might make some tiny progress in one’s understanding. That uncertain, tiny bit of progress has always been enough to lure me onwards.”

Now a graphic designer and math teacher, she challenges her colleagues and students to recognize the ways in which the fields effortlessly mingle.

Artful Achievements: An Interview with Professor Mary MacNaughton

Mary Davis MacNaughton ’70 has come full circle. The professor of art history and director of the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery began her formal studies as a student at Â鶹Çø in the 1960s. Then she went on to earn a PhD in Art History at Columbia University, worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and traveled extensively for research. Yet, MacNaughton ultimately returned to her roots at her alma mater to teach, guide, and mentor Scripps students in the visual arts.
