Offered through the , the science management program is designed to provide you with a powerful foundation in science, economics, and fundamental managerial skills. Majors complete a core program in addition to a five-course area of concentration in science. Concentrations include chemistry, physics, biophysics, biotechnology, neuroscience, environmental management, and public health.
Working with an adviser, science management majors study abroad and experience exciting summer opportunities and internships. In addition, you can create your own track in consultation with Professor of Chemistry Anna Wenzel, the lead science management adviser.
What are some courses appropriate for first-year students interested in exploring this field of study?
Since science management is an interdisciplinary major, we encourage you to begin taking general chemistry and introductory microeconomics in your first year. These serve as gateway courses into the science and business emphases of the major. Courses to consider include:

If you鈥檙e coming into Scripps with a less robust general chemistry background, we recommend that you start with taking section one of CHEM 014L. Available by permission to enroll (PERM) approval only, the class has one additional meeting time per week for additional instructional contact. If I decide to major or minor in this field, are there certain courses that need to be taken in a specific sequence?
Yes! CHEM 014L (fall) must be taken before CHEM 015L or CHEM 042L in the spring.
CHEM 042L must be taken concurrently with BIOL 042L. Known as IBC, CHEM 042L/BIOL 042L is an integrated course that affords course credit equivalent to CHEM 015L and BIOL 043L in a single semester.
CHEM 029L: Accelerated General Chemistry is designed for students who have previously had rigorous general chemistry preparation. It covers the CHEM 014L and CHEM 015L material in a single semester.
Introductory Microeconomics must be taken before taking other economics courses in the field.
Note that CHEM 029L is offered in the spring semester, but a placement diagnostic is administered in the fall as an entrance requirement. Can students who major or minor in this field complete a second major or minor (as a double major or a major/minor combination)? If so, what are some common pairings?
Yes. Since science management is an interdisciplinary major in science, economics, data science, and organizational studies, dual and double majoring is rare. Minors are not uncommon, however. Up to two courses (including prerequisite courses) may double count towards each of two majors, but not also a general requirement. You may exceed this double-counting limit if the total number of unduplicated courses on the approved senior major form for each major, excluding senior seminar and thesis, is at least six courses.
What other useful information should I know about this field of study?
You can pursue careers in fields like business analysis, data science, operations research, consulting, and various management roles within organizations. We encourage you to review trajectories of some of our recent graduates .
An exciting capstone for the science management major is participation in the Team Master鈥檚 Program (TMP) at the Keck Graduate Institute, a member of The Claremont Colleges. Few other schools offer students the real-world practice that students gain during the TMP, in which teams of three to five students work with sponsoring companies in a year-long consulting assignment to solve real-world problems.
Students form interdisciplinary teams and work with faculty, business, and industry advisers to perform contract research. The projects include both business and technical aspects.
