Joint Music Program

At a Glance

I’m interested in this field of study. Can you tell me more about it?

The Joint Music Program of Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, and Â鶹Çøs offers three ensemble courses:

  • MUS 173: Claremont Concert Choir
  • MUS 175: Claremont Concert Orchestra
  • MUS 176: Claremont Treble Singers

These ensembles allow you to gain experience in group performance. Students of various levels of musical skill may audition for these ensembles regardless of the majors or minors they intend to pursue.

Many students join the orchestra and choirs during their first academic year. Participation in these ensembles provides a great opportunity for you to continue developing your musical skills and meet fellow musicians from the upper classes and across the consortium.

The program also offers MUS 081: Introduction to Music in the Western World, a course for non-majors seeking to learn about Western music from a historical perspective. Joint Music Program classes generally meet at Â鶹Çø.

What are some courses appropriate for first-year students interested in exploring this field of study?

All four courses listed above are appropriate for first-year students.

If I decide to major or minor in this field, are there certain courses that need to be taken in a specific sequence?

The choral and orchestral ensembles listed above fulfill a requirement for the music major and minor. To learn more, please visit our site here.

Can students who major or minor in this field complete a second major or minor (as a double major or a major/minor combination)? If so, what are some common pairings?

Many students who major or minor in other areas also take classes within the Joint Music Program and Department of Music.

Music students often pursue other majors and minors as well, including psychology, biology, media studies, and many other disciplines. To explore some possibilities, feel free to reach out to any of the music faculty. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions in person during orientation week.

What other useful information should I know about this field of study?

To join one of the Joint Music Program ensembles, you’ll have to sign up for an audition here. During pre-registration, you may submit a perm request for the ensemble you wish to join. You’ll be able to add the class after your audition once the add/drop period begins.
